Basquiat Memoir

I love doing portraits, but when I participated in the African American show in Texas, my art teacher recommended that I get inspired by other artists’ methods. I knew Basquiat, and I got obsessed with his story and the portrayal of his art. I wanted to try it out so my painting didn’t just look like a plain realistic portrait, but also added a significance of why we remember his name.


I didn’t just want to copy his painting style, but to experiment and try to get into his role. I chose a front portrait, black and white, and easy to do because my purpose with the portrait was not so much the drawing of the person, but showing how colorful, magical, and impressive their art was.
